Imago 2007 – the new, powerful series of pictures. How did this name come about? What makes these art works by Dirk Jakobs so unique?
The term Imago – Latin for picture – can be explained from three different perspectives: in zoology it stands for the adult insect after pupation or after the last shedding of skin; by contrast, in analytical psychology it stands for the unconscious first impression of a role model, which is generally the father or mother; finally, it is also the name of a magazine for the application of psychoanalysis to the cultural sciences, founded in 1912 by psychoanalysts Otto Rank and Hanns Sachs, who were among the associates of Sigmund Freud.
Change, image, psyche – this trio is also reflected in Dirk Jakobs’ art. Moreover, it illustrates the creative principle of the artist, such as the fundamental avoidance of the colour black, which stands for night, darkness and death. In the ancient humours theory, it was the colour of melancholy. Jakobs’ series of pictures, however, shows the positive opportunities of life; in an unusually creative manner, it applies the power and effect of change processes. The focus of Imago 2007 is forwards, in the direction of life and light.
